Well hello there!
As I sit here writing this newsletter it’s my Friday afternoon and my Instacart shoppers are in two different stores working there magic. I’ve once again asked my Costco shopper to check the floral and outdoor section for the elusive $15 Fiddle Leaf Fig Plants. This time my shopper’s name is John and he has vowed to check both areas for me. Hopefully it will take long enough for me to write this newsletter that by the time you make it to the bottom of this issue we’ll both know if John found one.
What even is this?
It’s a newsletter that’s mostly about plants and plants stuff but through the lens that is Cami… so… I still don’t know. It’s a choose my own adventure style look at plants and the plant world. Is there something you’d like to see here? Let me know!
New plants this week…
One new plant this week, unless John pulls off a miracle… We’ll see. But this week’s plant isn’t that special. Honestly I don’t even know what the plant is. It’s actually the planter that means something this time. Plant Family, Meet Ripper:
Ripper was a cat. He was… well he was a very cranky old man cat who liked very specific things done in very specific ways. The best word to describe him was persnickety. Even when he was my little baby kitten he was more of an old man cat. In his later years he worse sweaters and t-shirts to soothe his anxiety. He passed away in 2019 and my heart has yet to recover. I’ve had many cats and several dogs. But Ripper was my one true cat and I was his human. I know. I know this isn’t the kind of content you expect in a plant newsletter. You can’t trust a woman who loves plants, cats, and polka dots to stay on topic every time. On January 3 of this year I ordered a special creepy spooky adorable little cement planter in the shape of a cat skull to remember my darling old man cat. And that was this week’s special plant arrival.
It took what felt like forever for this little guy to arrive from the PastelAlienShop, but I’m a fairly impatient person. Once it did arrive though I couldn’t have been more pleased.
Links link links links links everybody!
I feel like I’ve failed you all this week. I haven’t been reading much plant news or plant gossip. I’ve noted that there seems to be a lull right now as we’re in the harsh last months of winter and everyone is craving Spring but too sensible to talk about it. But I have two links for you.
Lung Health Institute’s top 5 oxygen increasing plants!
My super awkward first ever Instagram Live in which I plant baby spider plants!
In Case it Missed You
This link has nothing to do with plants. But I got a preview of one of the items in my partner’s newsletter this week and it was so funny that I snorted laughing. I mean yes I’ve had a couple of glasses of wine but still. You might want to check out his newsletter. You don’t even have to subscribe you can just read it on Substack on Saturday.
And the featured Instagram account of the week is….
@wildernisamsterdam
January is usually when my work team all gets on planes wherever we are in the world and meets somewhere to spend a week working and playing together. This time two years ago that place was Amsterdam and it was in the top 3 team meetup locations we've visited over my 8 years with the company. In preparation for our trip I started scoping out plant shops I’d like to visit. Knowing that I wouldn’t be able to bring live plants home with me from Amsterdam to Portland, OR and it being snowy, and us having a very full schedule of work, and eating food, and drinking wine, and touring architecture. And you know, getting Stroopwafel I never did make it to the plant store I so longed to visit. But I follow their instagram and let my eyes linger in blissful longing over every photo they post. I hope you love them as much as I do.
Did John find the Fiddle Leaf Fig?
Sigh. No friends. John did not find the mythic $15 Fiddle Leaf Fig while he was shopping my Costco order. And as far as I know my daddy hasn’t been to Costco since I asked him to be on the lookout for them so sadly my dreams of owning a Fiddle Leaf Fig from Costco are still but a dream. Maybe someday.
The end.
That’s it. that’s all I’ve got this week. But if you loved this pass it along to someone else. If you hated it you should let me know. Or just unsubscribe. That’s a viable option too <3
